Jean-Jacques Goldman brengt met dit lied (1982) een tribuut aan de Joodse kinderen die het leven werd ontzegd door de nazi’s, en die verdwenen zijn in Nacht und Nebel. Hij doet dat door een doodgewoon meisje te evoceren (hij noemt haar Sara), 8 jaar jong, met haar liefde voor muziek, een pop, met dromen: net als jij (= comme toi), maar die in een tijd leefde waar zij – anders dan jij – geen toekomst mocht hebben.
Het fragment hieronder komt uit een documentaire over Jean-Jacques Goldman, een geval apart in de wereld van de Franse chansonniers. Hierin vertelt hij zelf wat de achtergrond is van de liedtekst van ‘Comme toi‘, een hitsingle vaak gecovered, speciaal door kleine meisjes in the VOICE-achtige programma’s (aiaiaiai).
Goldman vertelt hoe hij ooit door het foto-album van zijn moeder bladerde, en daar bij al haar neven en nichten (kinderen vaak nog) zag staan – met de hand geschreven door zijn moeder – déporté. Toen pas realiseerde hij zich dat hij de zoon was van een Joodse ‘survivors’.
